can be seen below. Thank you to our sponsor Langwoods on K Road for processing the film as quickly as
possible and at such a small cost. Also, thanks to Greenlane Mazda and Mothers Cleaning Products for prizes. Hold mouse over images for descriptions.. and click on image for larger version. WHAT ARE THEY UP TO?! Article kindly borrowed and adapted slightly from Top Down Magazine August 1999 Written by Peter Sweetman. This event matched teams of three cars against each other, each team having a list of challenges to find and a camera to record the answers on. The idea for the event came from a similar event called 'The Roadkill Rally' in the U.S.A. Our event did not require the finding of flattened feral road users but it did make for some interesting photos and show what silly things mature adults will do to score points. We follow the efforts of team seven made up of Mike Saint, Keith Hammond , Howard Fox and Carly McCamish, and Shay & Peter Sweetman. Ready, Set, Go… Wow the question sheet had 30 things to photograph and a 24 shot film and one photo could only answer one question. We immediately put our heads together and started thinking of how to find these answers. We decided to split up, while Mike & Keith, & Howard and Carly would head off to a friendly Police Station to find a man in uniform while Shay and I were to race home to create a bride and prepare for some other answers. We decided that to do well we had to concentrate on the questions that carried the maximum points. But before any cars left the meeting point in Cornwall Park we photographed all of the cars for question 20 - A picture of MX5's, 10 points for each one in the picture. Approx 30 MX5's for around 300 points. Chic Lynch (as organiser) required a photo of the team number to identify the rolls of film at the end of the day, the result was the answer to question 18 - A photo of the whole team, 50 points beside an MX5, 100 bonus points for doing something silly. Question 2. A picture of a person in uniform beside one of your MX5's (100 points) Bonus of 50 points if you are wearing their hat, and a further bonus of 100 points if they are in your car. Carly organised a maximum 250 points with a friendly Ponsonby Police Inspector. On route from the Police station team 7 came across a Fire engine on the side of the road. Time to answer question 12, a picture of a fake accident involving an MX5 - 150 points. This photo also won the 'Funniest Photo' bonus! While driving through the city they passed an open ambulance station. With some quick smooth talking we had another 200 points. Some of the other buildings used by teams were a KFC drive in, a car wash, and a fire station. Question 28 A picture of Kiwiana on your cars bonnet. 30 points for a chocolate fish, 50 for L&P, 70 for a Lamington, 100 for a Buzzy Bee, 150 for a All Blacks top, 300 for a sheep. While some teams opted for the yummier edible examples our team set off for the nearest souvenir shop to borrow a toy sheep. 300 easy points. One creative team using trick photography even managed to get a real sheep on their bonnet! Next it was a rendezvous at Pete & Shays' house in Browns Bay to our place for a bridal photo. Now think about this, how many couples get married on a Sunday? The answer is none so we created our own. Question 13. A picture of a bride in a wedding dress. 200 points beside your MX5, 400 points inside your car. Shay quickly put on her wedding dress and tiara from just three weeks before while the ribbons from our wedding were being put on the car. We took the flowers from the vase in the hall and the result was worth 400 points. Team 5 managed to find a bridal shop with a model in the window and scored 200 points by parking their car in front. A Monet print was quickly taken off the wall for another 100 points - Question 27 A picture of an MX5 with a piece of art. Two tinsel wigs appeared from a wardrobe and were donned by Mike and Carly for Question 19 - Fancy dress, 100 points for a wig and a bonus 100 for an MX5 in the photo. Question 10. A picture of an MX5 with an animal. Some teams managed to snap a photo of one of their cars with a wandering chicken in a carpark while some others snapped their family pets. Group two took what was judged by the organiser as the best photograph of the day with two Golden Retrievers sitting in Richards car. Since Team 7 had a shortage of pets or animals Jake would have to do. Jake is an old thread bare orange haired three foot tall gorilla who looked rather cool wearing sunglasses. Question 25 required a picture of an MX5 in water for 150 points. This was easy we put a model MX5 in the kitchen sink. Next we scrambled back into the cars and headed off to Mike and Claire's place for more photos. On the way their Mike parked his car on the wrong side of the road in 'The Palms' to look like an American photo for Question 9 - A picture of an MX5 that looks like it was taken in another country for 70 points. Group 2 took an excellent shot of the Chinese stores on Beach Road in the City to look like it was taken in China Town. Mike parked his car under his neighbours' deck and photographed Keith from directly over the car to score another 100 points for Question 22. Back down the road we went to the children's playground that was closed due to work being done on it. Question 24 - A picture of team members upside down. 50 points for each member. The result was five members hanging upside down on a jungle gym for 250 points plus a few good laughs and shrieks of 'HOW DO I GET DOWN?!' We next planned to head to a shop in Takapuna where we had arranged by phone to borrow a shop mannequin and take our Abbey Rd photo. 7 We ducked into North Shore Mazda as we were going past to answer Question 8 - An MX5 for sale in a car yard. We found a 10th Anniversary MX5 for sale so we thought that had to be worth the maximum 300 points. Unfortunately our photo did not come out, the salesman that took the photo didn't push the button down far enough. Damn! Over the road from North Shore Mazda is a huge video rental store so we quickly borrowed a life size cut out of Jackie Chan & Chris Tucker from the movie Rush Hour for our celebrity photo Question 7, A famous person next to your MX5 - 300 points or in the car worth 400. That was a good score and it was quick as time was running out. In Takapuna we illegally parked outside Unispecs Sunglass shop, ran inside, and borrowed their mannequin to answer Question 14 - A picture of a shop dummy in your car for 200 points. As we were next to a pedestrian in a line. It was 200 points for a Beetles 'Abbey Road' picture with a bonus 50 if the car was in the shot. A parking warden could only watch us, and chuckle as we posed for the photo while our cars were slightly illegally parked. We then stopped at Jerry Clayton BMW in Lake Road, parked in front of their courtyard of Beemers and answered Question 4 - A picture of your MX5 besides another car. 50 points for a common sports car, 100 for a classic, 150 for an exotic (Ferrari or Lamborghini etc) with a bonus for a convertible that's not an MX5. The Z3 Roadster was not exactly an exotic but we scored the bonus points anyway! Question 21 was a one that we had to answer. It was going to be worth a lot of points if we got it right. If that plan failed we had a backup plan stored in the boot. -A picture of an MX5 with passenger vehicles, 20 points for each Taxi, 40 for each Bus, 80 for each Train, 100 for each Tram in the picture. Group 9 had a creative photo, they photographed one of their cars next to a tram and behind the car was a mural on a wall with two more trams painted on it - 300 points. We drove to the Britomart bus depot realising too late that they no longer stored the busses there. It was time for the backup plan. Out of the boot came 9 model trains, worth 90 points each) these were photographed with a bus in the back ground and Mikes car - 760 points. After answering Question 29 in the most difficult way possible we scored our 100 points for spelling MX5 using our bodies. Time was approaching the 12:30 finishing time so we had to get to the restaurant in Western Springs for lunch. This was when Mike and Keith realised they had been driving around all morning on empty!!. A splash and dash was urgently required at the nearest gas station. Chic, as organiser, had collected up all of the films from each team and organised the processing and printing at Langwoods on K Road. Langwoods had given us all free film for the event and had arranged a special deal on the processing which was covered by the five dollar entry fee per car. When the photos finally came back from processing we saw what we thought would have to be the photo that decided which team was the winner. Group 8 had a photo of 31 busses parked under the K Rd bridge! A whopping 1240 points. Unfortunately for them it didn't quite take the lead. This event was a challenge to everybody that participated and was an immense amount of fun. Team 7 and I'm sure everyone else will be looking forward to the next time that the club holds an MX5 Club of New Zealand Photo Rally! MX5 Club Photo Rally Rules Rules : 1.
